Oklahoma CPA License

Oklahoma CPA License

The below is a five-step process for being a certified CPA in Oklahoma.

Step 1. Complete Your Education

    1. Find and contact the institutions in Oklahoma that offer accounting programs, in order to get detailed information. All the certified accountants in Oklahoma must meet the educational criteria of the Oklahoma Accountancy Board. It includes a bachelor’s degree consisting of at least 150 semester hours of college credit and a bachelor’s degree. Also to be able to take the Uniform CPA Exam you must be a resident of Oklahoma.
    2. Also, make sure that the program which you are planning to attend is acceptable for the Oklahoma Accountancy Board. Use this database to find programs accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, your degrees must be reviewed by a member body of the National Association of Certification Evaluation Services, Inc. If you graduated from an international school. Request the assessment from the department directly. It will be forwarded to the Oklahoma Accountancy Board for review until finished.
    3. Enroll in courses that can get you college credit. A bachelor’s degree and the following courses must be included in your 150 semester hours of college credit:
      • 76 semester hours of upper-level accounting courses
      • 30 semester hours of accounting courses above the introductory or principles course level
      • 9 semester hours in upper-level business courses

CPA review courses may be accepted for credit if they are listed on your transcripts and your college has offered you credit for them.

The Board needs transcripts from each institution you have attended.

Step 2. Take The Uniform CPA Exam

After meeting Oklahoma’s educational standards, you may register for candidacy for the Uniform CPA Exam.

  1. In Oklahoma, you may apply for the Uniform CPA Exam. You can do it either online or by sending in a completed Qualification Application along with the following documents:
    • A 2” x 2” passport-sized photo of yourself
    • A notarized Affidavit Verifying Lawful Presence in the United States
    • Official transcripts from each college attended,
    • A $50 fee payable to the Oklahoma Accountancy Board
  2. Within 5 to 7 days, the Oklahoma Accountancy Board will review and process your Qualification Application, and you will get an Approval Letter indicating that you are an Exam Candidate.
  3. To take the Uniform CPA Examination, you must apply online. At this time, you would pay a $50 application fee to the Oklahoma Accountancy Board.
  4. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) will give you a payment coupon after your application has been accepted, and you must pay the exam fees to NASBA at that time. You must pay NASBA for each part of the exam that you intend to take. You can also get an acceptance package from the Oklahoma Accountancy Board.
  5. You will get a Notice to Schedule (NTS) the Uniform CPA Exam via U.S. mail or email once NASBA receives the payment coupon
  6. To register for your exam at an Oklahoma testing center, go to the Prometric website.

Step 3. Gain The Necessary Experience

Finally, you’re able to meet the Oklahoma Accountancy Board’s experience criteria after you’ve completed all four parts of the Uniform CPA Exam.

  1. The Home Study Course on Professional Ethics offered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) must first be passed with a score of 90 percent or higher.
  2. Within four years of applying for a CPA license, all licensed accountants must have a minimum of one year of work experience.
  3. On the Experience Verification Form, you must report your experience.
  4. The Oklahoma Accountancy Board will give you an Application for Certification after they have submitted, checked, and accepted your Experience Verification Form.

Step 4. Get Your Oklahoma CPA License and Permit to Practice

Oklahoma has a two-tier system, this means that you must have a CPA license and a practice permit in order to lawfully practice accounting. Double-check to make sure that you meet all the requirements.

  1. Use the Application for Certification mailed to you by the Board to apply for your Oklahoma CPA License.
  2. When your application has been accepted, you can receive your CPA certificate by mail.
  3. You need to complete 40 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) before submitting an application for an Interim Permit to Practice.

Step 5. Stay Current Through Continuing Professional Education in Oklahoma

If you wish to keep your Oklahoma accounting license, you must meet the state’s continuing professional education (CPE) standards.

  1. You must complete 40 CPE hours in the calendar year to apply for your initial Permit to Practice.
  2. Every three years, you must complete 120 CPE hours in order to keep your Permit to Practice.
  3. Enroll in an instructional accepted program.
  4. Report the CPE online or via the Oklahoma Accountancy Board’s CPE reporting form, which will be posted on the website as the deadline passes.

What is the difference between a registered and licensed CPA in Oklahoma?

In most cases, a CPA certificate is just an endorsement. It ensures you took the CPA test and met the required eligibility criteria to take it. On the other hand, after you have met all of the standards set out by a board of accountancy you will get a CPA license.
